Chynna Ratner came forward in 2022 after surviving officer-involved domestic violence — abuse at the hands of a Hillsborough County Sheriff's detective. Her 13-minute video set off a wave of survivors sharing their stories. Today she speaks publicly, advocates locally, and is building a community that reminds survivors of one thing: you are more than what happened to you.

👉🏽 Officer-Involved Domestic Violence (OIDV) is one of the most under-discussed and systemically overlooked forms of abuse.
𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙗𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨 𝙖 𝙗𝙖𝙙𝙜𝙚, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙮𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙘𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙙𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙫𝙞𝙤𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚.

Access to weapons, institutional credibility, relationships within the justice system, and cultures rooted in loyalty and silence can create additional barriers for survivors seeking safety or accountability.

Domestic violence is not only physical violence. It can include coercive control, intimidation, stalking, surveillance, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse, threats, and manipulation through systems of power.

‼️ Research surrounding OIDV remains limited and heavily underreported, but existing studies and survivor accounts 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀: • institutional protection • retaliation against victims • minimization of complaints • lack of independent investigation • and the “blue wall of silence” that can shield abusive officers from accountability

Talking about this issue is not anti-law enforcement.
Acknowledging systemic failures is necessary if we want safer systems, better accountability, and real protection for survivors — regardless of who their abuser is.

In one week, I’ll be heading to Dallas to speak at the 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 (𝗖𝗖𝗔𝗪) to share my experience with officer-involved domestic violence (OIDV) — something I lived firsthand at 21, when I was in an abusive relationship with a Hillsborough County deputy (Daniel M. Because of documented law enforcement negligence, violations of SOP, and the alleged protection of my abuser by command staff, conditions were created that led that same individual to go on to murder his deputy girlfriend, Abigail Bieber, and himself.

Behind closed doors, I experienced emotional, mental, physical, and sexual abuse—and I felt like I couldn’t say anything.
𝘽𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚 𝙢𝙚?

When he had the badge, the power, and the protection of the system behind him.

In 2016, reports were made to HCSO about his behavior toward me. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗱 “𝘂𝗻𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱.” 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱.

After seeing that news, I broke my silence. I posted a 13-minute video sharing my story publicly for the first time.

That moment led to an ABC Action News I-Team investigation and brought everything I had lived through into the light.

A Hillsborough County deputy was recently arrested for putting a t𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿. 🚨📍

Yes… secretly tracking her location.

Let’s be very clear about something:
👉🏽 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤 𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙢𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩.

That’s not love.
That’s not protection.
That’s control.
𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴.

And stalking is not where abuse starts—it’s where it escalates to.
Because when someone is tracking you, monitoring you, needing access to you at all times…
that’s about power. Thats about entitlement.

That’s about “I need to know where you are and what you’re doing.”

Yes… secretly tracking her location.

Let’s be very clear about something:
👉🏽 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤 𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙢𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩.

That’s not love.
That’s not protection.
That’s control.
𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴.

And stalking is not where abuse starts—it’s where it escalates to.
Because when someone is tracking you, monitoring you, needing access to you at all times…

What a full circle moment — taking the pain i experienced and turning into true purpose.

First speaking opportunity of the year, and feeling very grateful. This was the first time Bruce and I got to meet in person. After everything we’ve both been through, after telling these stories separately—to stand in the same room and share it together… that was a lot. In the best way possible.

𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞—𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐫-𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 (𝐎𝐈𝐃𝐕, 𝐏𝐏𝐃𝐕).

And that’s a completely different situation. There’s power behind it. There’s influence. There’s this built-in layer of protection that makes it way harder to call out, and way easier to get away with.

And that’s the problem.

The signs are there. They were there for me. The control, the isolation, the escalation—it doesn’t just happen overnight. But a lot of the time, it gets missed… or brushed off… or explained away.

And we’ve seen what happens when that keeps happening.

The system has gaps. And in these situations, those gaps are dangerous. When officers aren’t held accountable by their own, when things don’t get fully investigated, when the badge is trusted more than the person speaking up—that’s where people fall through the cracks.

So yeah, talking about it is important. But actually doing something about it is what matters.

Law enforcement needs to hold each other accountable. Period. Not protect, not cover, not ignore—actually step in.

And we need to believe survivors. Even when it’s uncomfortable. Even when it doesn’t fit the narrative people want to believe.

Because this isn’t rare. It’s just not talked about enough.
And one thing I’m going to do — is talk about it.

𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿-𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗢𝗜𝗗𝗩)— or 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲-𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗣𝗣𝗗𝗩) — isn’t rare.

Research has found that domestic violence occurs in 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟰𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗮𝘄 𝗲𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀, compared to about 10% in the general population — meaning it can be𝟮–𝟰𝘅 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘆 in these households.

𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿-𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗢𝗜𝗗𝗩)— or 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲-𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗣𝗣𝗗𝗩) — isn’t rare.

Research has found that domestic violence occurs in 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟰𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗮𝘄 𝗲𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀, compared to about 10% in the general population — meaning it can be𝟮–𝟰𝘅 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘆 in these households.

Abusive partners often use survivors' love for their animals to manipulate them. One big issue is that most shelters don't allow pets, don't have the right facilities, or they're already full. This just makes it even harder for people who want to leave but also want to protect their furry family members.

The recent joint report by The National Domestic Violence Hotline and the Urban Resource Institute (URI) sheds light on the connection between domestic violence and pets. This report, based on a survey of nearly 2,500 survivors, emphasizes the importance of considering pets' safety when leaving an abusive relationship.

Recognizing that pets are integral members of our families, it is vital to factor them into the equation when planning to exit an abusive relationship. It is crucial for people to be aware that there are organizations dedicated to providing support and care for pets in the context of domestic violence.

She courageously broke free, but tragically, years later, the Deputy took his life and that of his Deputy girlfriend in a murder-suicide. Chynna now shares her story to help young women recognize dangerous relationship signs and seek support.

Meet Jeffrey! He's both an Alo Moves Instructor and a CAMP Instructor right here in Tampa! 💜💪🏼

He’s leading our ticketed-donation workout portion of the event, a 30-minute sculpt class.

It’s a way to spread good vibes, have some fun, and support Sunrise of Pasco County. All you need is yourself, some workout gear, a towel or mat, and a whole bunch of positive energy. Plus, it includes a post-class beer! Cheers to that!

But hey, if sweating it out isn't your thing, don't sweat it! This event is for EVERYONE, and it won't cost you a dime.

Swing by, chill out, donate to the supply drive, bid on awesome auction stuff, check out some cool vendors, and be sure to stick around for the main speech from Chynna Ratner and Sunrise of Pasco County.

So, let’s talk about Domestic Violence. What is it? What does it include? How do I know if I’ve experienced it or not?

Domestic violence is violence committed by someone in the victim's domestic circle. This includes:

Meet Chynna Ratner, The founder of 𝑴𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒏., she is also a survivor of domestic violence, and brings a deeply personal perspective to the cause. At the age of 21, she endured mental, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Deputy. Chynna's courageous escape from the clutches of her abuser led her on a path to empower young women to recognize the signs of dangerous relationships and seek the support they need.

At 𝑴𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒏., our mission is to provide a safe haven where survivors of DV, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can connect and support each other. We achieve this through a wide range of activities, from community events and online support, to fundraising efforts and resource sharing, and so much more.

Join us for our first ever community event October 26th from 6-9pm at Common Dialect Beerworks. This is a Community Event Supporting Survivors of Domestic Violence, and 100% of the money raised from this event goes directly to Sunrise of Pasco County.

It’s important to educate younger generations about the value of respect and the characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships before they start to date.

Tweens/teens may not be equipped with the necessary skills to develop and maintain healthy relationships, and may not know how to break up in an appropriate way when necessary.

Having real conversations and open communication may help them form healthy relationships and recognize the signs of unhealthy relationships, thus preventing the violence before it starts.

So what should ANYONE look for in a healthy relationship? Take a look below:

💜 Mutual respect. Respect means that each person values who the other is and understands the other person’s boundaries.

💜 Trust. Partners should place trust in each other and give each other the benefit of the doubt.

💜 Honesty. Honesty builds trust and strengthens the relationship.

💜 Individuality. Neither partner should have to compromise who he/she is, and his/her identity should not be based on a partner’s. Each should continue seeing his or her friends and doing the things he/she loves. Each should be supportive of his/her partner wanting to pursue new hobbies or make new friends.

💜 Good communication. Each partner should speak honestly and openly to avoid miscommunication. If one person needs to sort out his or her feelings first, the other partner should respect those wishes and wait until he or she is ready to talk.

💜 Anger control. We all get angry, but how we express it can affect our relationships with others. Anger can be handled in healthy ways such as taking a deep breath, counting to ten, or talking it out.

💜 Problem solving. Dating partners can learn to solve problems and identify new solutions by breaking a problem into small parts or by talking through the situation.

💜 Understanding. Each partner should take time to understand what the other might be feeling.

💜 Healthy sexual relationship. Dating partners engage in a sexual relationship that both are comfortable with, and neither partner feels pressured or forced to engage in sexual activity that is outside his or her comfort zone or without consent.

Most shelters will provide food, clothing, toiletries, linens and other necessities during their stay. And when these survivors leave the shelter they take these personal items with them so they are always in need of the items listed in this post.
